BF & I have been spending quite a bit time in Milbrae. During one of our visits, we stumbled upon this Vietnamese restaurant.
Ben Tre Vietnamese Homestyle Cuisine (Yelp)
219 El Camino Real
Millbrae, CA 94030
This place is always busy but the turnover is quite quick. The menu was pretty straightforward although I did notice that the prices were just a tad bit higher than normal.
We ordered the shrimp spring rolls, 5 spice chicken garlic noodles, and imperial rolls with beef and pork vermicelli. Let's start with the spring rolls. They were really good and I loved how they were really stuffed with lots of shrimp and vermicelli. The peanut sauce was more heavy on the oyster sauce side but still good.
My plate was really big! No wonder it costs $12.50. And they use the whole chicken to make 5 spice chicken. On my plate, I got the drumstick, a whole thigh, and then some. The garlic noodles lacked flavor but the chicken was really good.
BF ordered the vermicelli bowl. The fish sauce that came with it, I really liked. However the dish was just ok. nothing special.
I didn't want to make my decision about Ben Tre until I tried their pho so we went back another time this past week. This time I had the tomato and crab noodles while BF got the regular pho.
The tomato and crab noodle soup was really good, not too spicy. BF thought his pho was pretty good. The soup base was hot and very clear tasting.
Overall Ben Tre is not bad. It is a bit pricey but the size of the plates are pretty big. If you are in the neighborhood, do come and try it out.
